Brakes
FAQ's
ANSWER:
You need to service your brakes when the brake linings are worn down to
the minimum acceptable thickness specified by the vehicle manufacturer. So
the only way to tell if the brakes need replacement is to take the tires
off and inspect them.
You also need to have the brakes inspected if you are experiencing
problems like grabbing, pulling, pedal vibration, excessive noise, a brake
fluid leak or a soft, low or hard brake pedal.
There is no specific mileage interval to replace the brake linings because
of how the vehicle is driven, how the driver of the vehicle uses the
brakes, the weight of the vehicle, the design of the braking system and
various other factors. The brakes on the same vehicle driven by different
people could last between as little as 20,000 to as many as 70,000
depending on how and where the vehicle is driven. A brakes on a vehicle
driven mainly on the highways will outlast that of a vehicle driven mainly
in the city in stop and go traffic. An aggressive drivers brakes will wear
out sooner than a person's that allows plenty of time to gradually
stop.
The front brakes usually have to be replaced more often than the rear
brakes because the front brakes do as much as 80% of the stopping. But,
the rear brakes should always be inspected and adjusted to make sure they
are working properly or the front brakes will wear out faster.
